Here’s an unusual piece of horse-drawn machinery. CAA members Jack & Marge Day saw this vehicle at a “rough and tumble” sale in Lancaster County, Pennyslvania, and sent these photos of it.

Jack wrote to say that this is a “stump or rock mover; note the curved wood beams for higher clearance.”

… literally.

This is Koos de Ronde (Netherlands), during his winning round in the Driving World Cup at Mechelen.

Hope you enjoy this amazing (and slightly terrifying) camera angle.

… but if you’re a horse person, I can almost guarantee that you’ll enjoy this music video:

This blog post has nothing to do with horses or carriages.

Rather, we are here today to discuss the weather. And how much we’re all longing for spring right about now, after a colder-than-normal winter that started earlier than normal.

Here in Lexington, we were spoiled several days ago with a gloriously sunny, warm weekend. It was just enough to get all the snowdrops in our yard to bloom and to trick us into thinking about that early spring we were promised by a certain groundhog.

And so today, of course, it’s been snowing, and the temperature is nearly thirty degrees colder than it was yesterday.

In trying to do my part to encourage spring along, I offer these few photos of a family of robins that set up house under our porch ceiling last year.

last spring, a robin pair built this nest on our front porch; by mid-May, we could see first one baby bird …

... then two baby birds ...

... and both parents kept feeding them and feeding them and feeding them

... and feeding them some more, until they were big enough to fly away

Even though the big day was yesterday, I offer the following guest post by Martha Miles, in honor of Valentine’s Day:

Valentine for a Coachman

by Martha Miles

Valentine’s Day often takes us away from our sweethearts, an experience that drivers in the transportation business have had for centuries. Nearly 200 years ago, in 1826, this affectionate Valentine appeared in a tiny booklet published in London. It captures a coachman’s feelings for a laundry maid as he sees her at work. Perhaps you’d like to share it with someone you love this February.

From a Coachman to a Laundry Maid:

Early this morning at the tub,
I heard you sing, and saw you scrub;
The rising suds were seen to flow
About your arm like driven snow;
I smack’d my whip, and drove away,
But gave a blessing to the day–
That made you my fair Valentine,
And hope in wedlock you’ll be mine.

The answer:

I heard you give your whip a smack,
Peep’d out, but only saw your back–
So nice you mount the box and drive,
You are the smartest lad alive;
I write to say that I incline,
To take you for a Valentine.
