history

I was looking for an old photo to share with you today, and I came across this gem: driving on the Boulevard in Washington, D.C.’s Potomac Park, c. 1908.

And, although this photo has no horses or carriages in it, it offers a fascinating glimpse of the growing D.C. skyline, c. 1931.

Here’s the final photo from our Paris (Kentucky) collection. There’s a carriage in this photo … waaaay in the background, beside the tree.

But more important, in the foreground, there’s a PUPPY!!

In this photo, three men, who look like they’re wearing uniforms of some sort, sit in a carriage and a fourth man stands beside it. Are they merely posing for a photo? Are they headed to a parade? And what is the near-side, back-seat passenger holding?! (It looks like a light-saber, but I know that can’t be right …)

I have three more photos to share from the small batch I purchased on Saturday in Paris (Kentucky). In this one, two ladies pose for a photo in their runabout-type buggy and one of them holds an umbrella. Their horse appears to be a bit on the shy side.

On Saturday, A.J. and I visited a couple of antiques stores in nearby Paris, Kentucky. At one of them, I found a small collection of amusing photos with horses (and “horses”) and carriages. The shopkeeper said that the photos were all from a local family, and they appear to date from the early twentieth century.

The first two of the five we purchased show a “tandem” with three people in the carriage, and a big group of people posing for a photo in and around a carriage …
