CAA events

On Saturday afternoon and evening during the CAA Carriage Festival, I took some photos in the open air between the barns and the indoor arena.

We had some sunshine, and some rain … and lots of beautiful carriages …

Are you old enough (as I am) to remember when “Williamsburg colors” were dull, muted, and … well, faded, versions of blue, green, and the like?

I don’t remember how long ago it happened, but I do remember reading that many of the Colonial Williamsburg buildings, including the governor’s palace, were re-envisioned and reinterpreted once the curators realized that the faded-looking colors had, in fact, simply faded over the years.

On Sunday, before heading home from the Carriage Symposium, I was finally able to tour the palace … and all I can say is, wow, do those gorgeous colors POP …

As promised, here are a few photos of the fife-and-drum corps, militia, and cannon demonstrations on the courthouse square, which I happened to see on Friday evening while at Colonial Williamsburg.

The man in this first photo was watching the proceedings as well, from across the street.

In real life, this year’s fabulous CAA / CWF International Carriage Symposium is over. But here on the blog, we’re still on Friday …

After three lectures in the morning, all symposium attendees enjoyed a delicious luncheon hosted by CWF’s president, Dr. Campbell.

Then, several people braved the on-and-off thunderstorms to enjoy the afternoon open house at the stables.

This year, for the first time that I can recall (perhaps because there were fewer people?), folks were invited to climb in, and on, the various carriages instead of just looking at them. …

Later that afternoon, I happened on to a militia (and cannon!) demonstration on the courthouse square, so I’ll be sharing photos of that soon as well. But now, back in real-life time, I’m heading out to enjoy a nearly-full day of exploring Williamsburg’s Historic Area. Stay tuned for photos!

Today’s been a delightful (but long) day of sitting while listening to three fabulous lectures, walking all over Williamsburg’s Historic Area, getting rained on, and, as a surprise treat, watching some muskets and cannon being fired. I still have all of today’s photos to edit, but I’m tired and really need to get some sleep. Soooo, you’ll have to wait a bit for the photos, I’m afraid.

In the meantime, may I suggest visiting the decorative arts museum when / if you’re next in Williamsburg. Mindy and I stopped there this evening on a bit of a walk-around before dinner, and I had my phone with me …
