We’ve had such a loooong, cold winter this year, that today’s “bonus” post (the first of two for today) is one in which we welcome the first full day of spring.

These photos are all from yesterday morning.

If you’re an admirer of horses, you’ve no doubt seen at least one (or several) of Robert Vavra’s photographs or books. He has an uncanny ability to take photos that look like something out of a fairy tale, or a dream.

If you are a fan of Robert Vavra’s photos, and if you’ll be in or near the Kentucky Horse Park before the end of May, you may want to stop and see the new exhibit at the KHP’s International Museum of the Horse. The exhibit, which opens today, is the first major retrospective of Vavra’s work.

Our local newspaper had an article on Friday about the exhibit and the artist. To read the full story and to see a couple of images from the exhibit, click here.

This has nothing to do with horses or horse-drawn vehicles … or with much of anything, really. But I couldn’t resist.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

Yesterday’s funny video (an old Budweiser Clydesdale commercial) prompted Nancy to send a link to this amusing dressage pas de deux.

Enjoy!

Tomorrow, we’ll have one more funny video, and then we’ll get back to carriage- and driving-related things.

Our local newspaper had a nice story yesterday about a donkey named Smoke. He was a malnourished little guy when he was befriended, and nursed back to health by, U.S. soldiers in Iraq. There is an effort underway now to bring Smoke to the U.S., where he would serve as a therapy animal for  families of military personnel who’ve been wounded or killed in battle.

As you might imagine, it costs a lot more to ship a donkey overseas than it does a dog or a cat. One of the new financial sponsors of the effort is the Lexington-based company Big Ass Fans (they make low-speed, high-volume fans, and their mascot is a donkey named Fanny).

You can read the newspaper story, and see a picture of Smoke, here: http://www.kentucky.com/2011/03/14/1670054/big-ass-fans-leads-effort-to-bring.html.

Smoke’s story reminded me of this funny Budweiser Clydesdale commercial from several years ago:

And when I went over to YouTube to fetch the commercial, I found this clip about the Budweiser Clydesdales. I think this is from the Missouri State Fair.
