Lexington & KHP

Yesterday afternoon, I had the opportunity to drive around the Kentucky Horse Park’s cross-country fields to see the completed and decorated marathon obstacles. Today and tomorrow, these will be busy with competitors walking the course and practicing their routes through the various obstacles. And on Saturday, of course, they’ll be filled with horses, ponies, and carriages … and surrounded, we hope, by lots and lots of cheering spectators. If you’re in or near Lexington this weekend, come on out to the Kentucky Horse Park!

If you recall seeing photos of the marathon obstacles from just before the 2010 World Equestrian Games, you’ll notice two major differences here: 1) the vines are doing a wonderful job of growing up and over the pergola on “Mick’s Mountain,” and 2) the grass is still green!

And here’s a view of the lovely new dressage / cones arena …

Here at the Kentucky Horse Park, we’re getting ready for the third annual Kentucky Classic CDE. I went over to the stabling area earlier today to see the “drivers’ lounge” I’d heard about …

… which looks rather lovely and relaxing. The only other thing going on so far (while I was there) was some horse-bathing. But competitors, organizers, and officials are all making their final preparations for the event, which starts tomorrow. Stay tuned!

Today’s post is slightly off-topic, but not quite as far off as you might think.

Here at the Kentucky Horse Park, the CAA office is next to the office and barn of the Horse Park’s mounted police. And, as of this week, the police-horse barn has two new employees.

Meet Otis (getting an ear rub in the second photo) and Madison …

On my way to work this morning, I followed this (huge!) horse trailer in to the Kentucky Horse Park:

The horses certainly looked friendly (Can you see them?) and, as best I could tell, well rested and comfortable, as they munched on hay and said “hello” to the man in the parking booth. But boy oh boy, have they come a long way to get here — for the current hunter/jumper show and Grand Prix competitions here at the Park, I assume. I didn’t recognize the license plate at first, but when I got close enough to read it, realized that the truck and trailer hail from Mexico.

I was in the office earlier (Saturday afternoon), working on the August issue of The Carriage Journal, and I meant to post this photo. And then I forgot.

So here I am, with only about half an hour left on Saturday.

I took this photo on Friday, just outside the side door of our CAA office at the Kentucky Horse Park. It was a picture-perfect day…

Given the time, I think this post will have to count for both Saturday and Sunday, if you don’t mind.
