horses & driving

For today’s study of early roads, here’s a c. 1890s photo of Boston’s North Terminal train station.

This view features a wide variety of, mostly commercial, vehicles … including a “billboard” on wheels. Enjoy!

I’ll admit: I refuse to decorate for Christmas or even listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving weekend. And I won’t do any Christmas shopping that weekend, if I can help it. To my mind, the best possible way to spend the Friday after Thanksgiving is to eat a big piece of pumpkin pie for breakfast and then enjoy a relaxing day at home.

But now that we’re into December, I wanted to share this adorable Christmas ad we saw on TV this weekend. If you’ve already seen this on the CAA’s Facebook page, I apologize for the dual posting, but it’s worth it! 🙂

You’ll definitely want to spend some time studying today’s fabulous old photo.

The first thing you’ll notice is New York City’s Flatiron Building, c. 1903, at the intersection of Broadway and Fifth Avenue. Then, as you look more closely, you’ll find pedestrians, streetcars (certainly not horse-drawn … perhaps electric? … but there are no wires to be seen), horse-drawn trucks, delivery vehicles, private coachman-driven vehicles, hansom cabs, and more. Enjoy!

I just realized that (eeek!) Christmas is only three months away. Some of us, then, may be needing one of these fairly soon …

If and when you have about twenty minutes to spare, take a look at this wonderful 1967 video about horse-drawn vehicles. It features a curmudgeonly narrator, with a lovely Scottish accent … and quite a lot of interesting information.

Enjoy!
