Drawing no. 2 in our series of old, hand-drawn images of artillery harness shows the off-side wheeler:

.

Some time ago, while looking for article inspiration for the (August) frontier / military issue of The Carriage Journal, we came across a file with several old drawings of artillery harness. These are clearly hand-drawn and quite old. But, unfortunately, there is nothing on any of the pages, or in the file, to indicate their age or whence they came.

So we’ll just have to enjoy.

This drawing, no. 1, shows the harness for the near-side wheeler. I’ll share the other three in the set over the next few (well, three) days.

.

And, finally, in this video, a patient pair of horses waits while bales of Internal Revenue (tax) stamps are unloaded from the wagon.

.

… with horses just standing around, swishing flies …

until the Mail Coach arrives in a hurry, tosses mail bags off, gets a few tossed onto the coach, and is driven quickly away.

.

I hope you don’t mind, but I have a few more of these old mail-delivery videos to post. All three (today and over the weekend) are from 1903.

In this one, mail bags are loaded onto waiting wagons, and one of the wagons drives away. Then, at about the 50-second mark, a smaller vehicle arrives and the driver and single horse expertly back it up to the loading dock …
